Make sure you write a good covering letter no more than one page. Short and to the point expressing your interest in the position and why you think you would be the right person for the job.

Your cv is an introduction to yourself, the skills and qualities you can bring to the role all laid out in a clear and easy to understand format. The whole reason for the cv is to make the employer interested enough in you to want to see you for an interview.

It should contain a brief description of your education and your employment history - not an autobiography. It is often the case that putting down too much information is just as damaging as writing too little.

Here are some useful tips on writing your cv :

• Keep it short - no more than two pages long.
• Keep it in a logical order.
• Be honest - it is easy for an employer to check the details.
• Make sure you outline any relevant training and qualifications gained.
• Put your current or most recent employment first and then work backwards.
• Keep to the point, don't ramble on and make sure the information is relevant.
• Include details of some hobbies and social pursuits, clubs etc.,
• Give information on two referees.

CV Do's and Don'ts :

• Do make sure your cv is well presented and in an easy to read format.
• Do make sure that the grammar is correct with no spelling mistakes.
• Do be honest.
• Do outline your skills and achievements.
• Do make sure your contact details are on the cv as well as in the covering letter.
• Don't make the cv too long it will put the reader off.
• Don't miss out important information.
• Don't give false or misleading information.
• Don't send your CV out without double checking it first.

Remember that the purpose of sending a covering letter and CV is to get you an interview. You want to meet with the interviewer discuss your CV in more detail so it has to be interesting. You have to highlight your skills and sell yourself to your prospective employer. When applying for a job sometimes hundreds of CV's will land on a desk and have to be looked at. To ensure you have the best possible chance of getting to interview stage make sure you have done everything you possibly can in the preparation of your covering letter and CV.
